Review of Point 65N Mercury by Craig Martin:
Possibly the most versatile kayak on the market, the Point 65N Mercury is a single, or a double, with the addition of a section. The sections lock together using a moulded link, and ratchet strap. Each cockpit is equipped with rudder pedals, and cords, so the rudder can be used in either configuration. The thing I love about the Mercury, is that it is a proper single, or double, with no compromise in performance. The kayak is quick, and agile in its handling. Also a great solution for those that do not want roof racks, or have storage issues.
Each cockpit has a seat, with inflatable backrest for comfort. The bow and stern sections have a rubber hatch, and provide both storage and flotation. There is a bungee in front of each cockpit, and a bottle holding recess behind each too. The cockpit rims on the Mercury are suitable to hold a neoprene spraydeck. The rudder is an extendable skeg (a turn of a knob to extend or retract) and when extended, the pod that houses it on the rear is free to move from side to side with the rudder cords looped on to a toplate, giving amazing bite.
